SOAR SASKATCHEWAN 2020

SOAR Saskatchewan is a 10 day discipleship and mission training program run by Multiply (the mission organization in the Mennonite Brethren denomination). It happens here in Saskatoon during the February school break. Teams from around Saskatchewan eat, sleep, learn, and worship together and then go out into the city to learn and serve.

Throughout the 10 days participants will spend a weekend of orientation including a learning tour through the vulnerable sector of Saskatoon, a day focused on prayer, and some team time. They’ll then spend Monday to Friday working with a ministry assignment in Saskatoon. In the past SOAR has partnered with organizations like The Bridge on 20th, The Lighthouse, The Friendship Inn, and Central Haven Senior’s Care Home.

This year Forest Grove Community Church hopes to send a youth & young adult team.

Here are other specific details you need to know:

PRE-TRIP INFORMATION MEETING: We will be holding a SOAR 2020 information meeting for potential participants and their parents on Sunday, November 3rd at 3:30pm at Forest Grove Community Church in the lounge.

WHO: Applicants can be anyone in grade 9-12 and in the Young Adult age group. Our team will join with teams from around Saskatchewan coordinated by Multiply.

WHERE: Saskatoon, SK – You will sleep, eat and train at Forest Grove Community Church. Activities will be around the city, particularly in the core areas of Saskatoon.

WHEN: February 13-22, 2020 (you will have to miss school on Friday, Feb. 14th).

LEADERS: Unknown at this time

COST: The total cost of SOAR is $450.00. Each individual must contribute $250.00 on their own, paid to Forest Grove Community Church by cash, cheque (payable to Forest Grove Community Church or FGCC), debit or credit (additional service fees apply) during our office hours, Monday-Friday 9am-4:30pm. The additional $200.00 per individual will be raised together through a fundraiser and through sending out support letters that ask for prayer and donations.

PLEASE NOTE!!!! *Multiply charges only $400 for the SOAR program (as listed on their website). We are asking for $450 per participant to cover extra costs such as pre-team meetings, transportation during the trip, and any outings as a group during a team day.

WAIVER: A GroveYouth All Year Waiver and a Multiply Waiver will both need to be completed and handed in TO THE FOREST GROVE OFFICE by the Form deadline. We will submit the MB waiver on your behalf.

FORM DEADLINE: Wednesday, December 11th, 2019 by 4:30pm.

FINANCE DEADLINE: Friday, January 10th, 2020 by 4:30pm.

HIGH SCHOOL LIT PROGRAM

Because leadership is a value of GroveYouth and because we want to have consistency opportunities for students to engage in leadership development through all of their years in kids and youth ministry at our church, we are changing the name of our program so that is best represents what students experience from grades 5-12; discipleship through leadership development. Here is all the information you need to know to apply for our High School LIT Program.

Who: Students in Grade 9-12

Description: A group of high school students coming together to serve the Jr. High ministry in a variety of ways and learning together in discipleship.

Qualifications to Apply:
  • You must attend training on Friday, September 6th at 5:00pm
  • You are in Grades 9-12
  • You are committed to showing up on time and staying until the evening is done (6:30pm – 10:45pm) and are ready to participate in all portions of our night together
  • Communicate appropriately if you are not able to attend one evening
  • Expectation is ONE WEEKS notice when possible, and that you attend at least 3/4 weeks per month
  • Upon acceptance, you agree to read the High School LIT Program Manual provided to you.

Time Commitment: Friday nights from 6:30pm-10:45pm from September 6, 2019-June 5, 2020 excluding school breaks. There will also be a Sr. High LIT Retreat from October 18-20, 2019.

Please note:

  • Everyone must apply, even if you were apart of the Service Team last year
  • To apply, you need to provide the name and email address of an adult (18 or older) who has been in a supervisory position over you (ex. LIT Coordinator, boss/supervisor at a job, teacher, coach, etc.). Please have that information ready before you begin the application process

SHORT TERM VOLUNTEER

If you are looking at getting involved but can’t commit to more than one or two weeks over the year, if you’re in need of service hours, or want to cook for us, then this is for you! Different opportunities include:

  • Cooking a meal for one of our leadership teams (approx. 30 people)
  • Preparing snack for Sr. High (approx. 100 people)
  • Helping out with our program for a night
  • Driving students for events (if needed)
  • Cooking for retreats (weekend commitment)
